First, choose a processor — it determines the socket. Then the chipset: A more expensive chipset allows for more speed, ports, and expansion. Finally, the form factor, so it fits into the case.

ATX is the standard size and offers the most slots. Micro-ATX is more compact and often cheaper. Mini-ITX is for smaller computers, but offers minimal expansion options.

This is determined by the motherboard and processor — the same board cannot run both. The new system prefers DDR5; DDR4 is cheaper and allows you to use existing memory.
