Power supply — how many watts do you need and what does 80 PLUS mean?
The power supply is the only part that, when it breaks, will follow with everything else. That's why this is where the 50 GEL saved is the most expensive. If you answer these three questions — watts, certification, modularity — you can't go wrong.
How many watts — calculate from the video card
The processor and other components consume relatively little; the budget is determined by the video card. Manufacturer's recommendations:
- RTX 4060 / 5060 / RX 7600 — 550W;
- RTX 4070 / 5070 / 5060 Ti — 650-750W;
- RTX 4080 / 5080 — 850W;
- RTX 4090 / 5090 — 1000W and above.
A 100-150W supply is useful, not a waste: a unit that doesn't run on the ceiling is quieter and lasts longer. The fan spins less, the components heat up less.
80 PLUS — This is not a stock, this is a performance rating
There is a common misconception: 80+ Gold does not mean that the block is more powerful. It means that a larger part of the energy taken from the network goes to the computer and less is lost as heat.
The practical benefits are twofold: small electricity savings and — more importantly — a better certificate usually means better enclosures and protection schemes. Modular or not?
A non-modular unit has all the cables permanently attached — unused cables are left to pile up in the case and block airflow. On a fully modular unit, you only connect what you need.
If the case is small or has a glass wall, modular makes sense. If the budget is tight and the case is spacious — 1stPlayer ACK 850W 80+ Bronze The type non-modular works perfectly.
ATX or SFX
A regular ATX block will not fit in compact (ITX) cases — an SFX format is required. This is the only setting where an error will appear after purchase, so check the case specifications in advance.
What not to do
A nameless block that only says watts and no certificate — those watts are often peak, not constant. Also: transferring an old block to a new video card doesn't always work — the RTX 40 and 50 series require a 12VHPWR connector or a corresponding adapter.
