Hot-Swap Keyboards and Switches — A Beginner's Guide
„Custom” mechanical keyboards have gone from an expensive hobby to a budget mainstream — for 200-300 GEL, you can buy a keyboard that rivals the sound and feel of something 2-3 times more expensive. Key terms: Hot-Swap, Gasket Mount, and switch types. Let’s break down each one.
Three types of switches
Linear — Smooth actuation without any step, from start to finish. Best for gaming: fast, predictable, and moderately noisy. Example: Seiya switches In AULA F75.
Tactile — You feel a distinct „step” when you press. Ideal for typing: your finger knows exactly when the key has registered.
Clicky — Tactile + distinct "click" sound. Some people love it, others in the room — rarely.
Hot-Swap — Why is this a key feature?
A hot-swap socket means that the switches can be pulled out of the keyboard with tweezers and replaced with new ones — without opening them, without any hassle. In practice, this gives you three things: (1) replacing a worn-out switch is a matter of minutes; (2) you can put different switches on individual keys (e.g., hard switches on WASD); (3) the keyboard „grows” with you — if your tastes change, you don’t have to buy the entire keyboard.
Gasket Mount and the sound "thock"„
Older budget keyboards used to press the plate directly onto the plastic — the result was a thick, „clicky” sound. In the Gasket Mount design, the plate „floats” on soft gaskets, and there are layers of foam in the housing — the result is that soft, deep sound that you know on the Internet as „thock.” This design is made Keydous NJ98 and modern models of AULA/Epomaker.
Layout — How many keys do you need?
- 60-65% — Minimalism, maximum space for the mouse; F-row with combinations;
- 75% — Golden mean: F-series remains, size is compact (AULA F75, NuPhy Air75 V2);
- 96/100% — Do you need a NumPad? The 96% layout fits Excel and accounting into a compact case (Keydous NJ98).
Where should I start?
If the first one is mechanical — take the Hot-Swap model with linear switches in the 75% layout: it is a universal starting point and you can change it in any direction later.
